Early Half Eagles
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-5, High R.5 -- Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. This is a rare early die pairing among the Large Eagle, Large 8 half eagle varieties of this date (BD-2 through BD-5). All of those varieties are rare or nearly so, but Dannreuther estimates that the BD-5 is High R.5, or 30-40 known, which would make it the rarest of the four by a slim margin if the other varieties' survival estimates are accurate. Both the 8 and 9 in the date are large and about even at their tops. The reverse shows a perfect cross pattern in the stars, and the first A is above and not touching feather 4. In this die state a crack proceeds from star 7 to the rear curls, but does not visibly show down into the date. This sandy-gold coin shows regular but extensive microabrasions throughout much of the surfaces on both sides, but more heavily on the obverse. A couple of heavier abrasions still show on the central profile of Liberty, which also shows a somewhat sunken appearance. A rare coin, but one for which a personal inspection (a good idea on any coin) is suggested.
