For his ninth labour, Herakles was ordered to take the famous belt of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons.Hippolyta is commonly depicted on Greek pottery with her belt across her chest, holding a sword and a spear. She was no ordinary queen, in fact, she had a distinctive armour given to her by Ares, the god of war.Once Herakles arrived at the land of the Amazons to kill their queen, Hera, who knew what the hero was up to, warned the Amazons of the incoming threat. As soon as Herakles saw the army of the Amazons wearing their armour, he knew he was under attack, and he quickly killed Hippolyta piercing her with his sword, stripped the belt off her and sailed back to Eurystheus.
