GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, India General Service Medal, left facing effigy of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem and veil, surrounding the head is the inscription VICTORIA REGINA // Victory crowning a seated nude warrior, in the exergue of the medal are lotus flowers and leaves, with SAMANA 1891 clasp, with new ribbon, awarded to 755 Sepoy Vihaloo, regimental name unclear, VF, ex Ajit Singh Collection. The India General Service Medal was approved on 1 March 1854. It was awarded for various minor military campaigns in India, during 1852 to 1895. Each battle or action covered by the medal was represented by a clasp on the ribbon; 24 were sanctioned, the maximum awarded to one man is thought to be seven. SAMANA 1891: The Samana is a ridge of hills running east-west, south of Khanki valley, marking the southern edge of the Tirah region. It is about 12 miles long and its highest point is 6000 ft. The Khyber Pass is some 30 miles to the north. It had been captured by the British in the Miranzai Expedition of 1891, along with two main forts built on it, Fort Lockhart in the middle and Fort Gulistan on the western end.
