Syria or vicinity, Uncertain. Ca. 2nd-4th centuries A.D. Æ (10 mm, 0.80 g, 9 h). Laureate head of Serapis(?) left / Palm tree or branch; in left field, partial date (ЄTOY[C ...]). Dark brown patina with earthen deposits. Nearly very fine.

A thorough check of both Krzyzanowska and de Saulcy on Palmyra as well as Hamburger on the minims of Caesarea does not find a match. It is perhaps closest to Hamburger 20, a Caesarean imitation of Tyre with Tyche left on the obverse and palm tree on the reverse. However, our coin is clearly not Tyche on the obverse, and additionally sports a partial date on the reverse. An intriguing piece worthy of further study.

Estimate: $75
