Ancients
THRACO-MACEDON. 'Hacksilber.' Ca. 500-400 BC. Group of 16 cast AR ingots (153.12 gm). As found. "Hacksilber" is a German term used to describe irregular silver ingots sometimes found in various-sized groupings in an ancient context, usually chopped pieces of coins, jewelry or purpose-cast ingots intended to be melted down and made into blanks for new coins and other objects. These seem to all be purpose-cast ingots, some broken into pieces, all found in a single group. The largest, a hemispherical chunk, weighs 31.80 grams and the lightest weighs in at 1.77 grams, with every gradation between. A few are encrusted with "horn silver," an indication of great age. The fabric of the largest piece is reminiscent of the large uniface coins produced by the Thraco-Macedonian tribes such as the Derrones, hence our attribution.
