Ancients
IONIA. Uncertain city. Ca. 650-600 BC. EL sixth stater or hecte (11mm, 2.28 gm). NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5. Period of the Artemision Find. Blank convex surface / Two incuse punches side-by-side, one contaning a large pellet. SNG Kayhan --, cf. 674 (no pellet). Weidauer --, cf. 4 (same). Extremely rare, apparently unrecorded with pellet in reverse incuse!
The very earliest form of coinage is represented by typeless (blank) globules, carefully weighed to a specific standard, with one or more punch marks on one side, later evolving into a proper "reverse." Nine such "typeless" electrum pieces were among the famous "Artemision Find" in Ephesus in 1904. This would seem to be a newly discovered variety, with a large raised pellet in one of the reverse incuse punches.
