Ancients
IONIA. Uncertain city. Ca. 650-600 BC. EL half-stater (15mm, 7.13 gm). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 3/5. Blank, roughened convex surface / Three incuse punches containing abstract lines, the two outer punches roughly square, the central one rectangular. Linzalone --, cf. 1024 (striated stater of similar weight and similar incuse punches). Unpublished in Weidaur, Kayhan, Rosen or other standard references. Apparently unique!
The roughened obverse of this hemistater could be viewed as a stage midway the blank issues featuring multiple incuse punches (Linzalone LN 1005-1007) and the "striated" types that appeared shortly thereafter (Linzalone LN 1024-1025). The obverse also resembles the "pebbled" surface seen on other early electrum pieces (see the following two lots).
