Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (19mm, 3.92 gm, 7h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5. Spain (Colonia Patricia?), ca. 18-16 BC. Bare head of Augustus right with unkempt hair, dotted border / AVGVSTVS, Capricorn right, holding globe attached to rudder and bearing cornucopia on back. RIC 126. RSC 21. Rare. Perfectly struck in superb metal, with brilliant, mirror-like fields. Seldom seen in this grade!
Although this coin has the same catalog numbers as the previous lot, the coins are quite different! The portrait on this example is a bit more severe with a somewhat haggard look, as opposed to the gentle and well-coiffed presentation on the previous coin. Also, the obverse has a clear and carefully engraved dotted border, whereas the issues usually have a linear border.
