Lucilla, wife of Lucius Verus (Augusta, AD 163-182). Orichalcum sestertius (31mm, 28.99 gm, 12h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5, light smoothing. Rome, AD 164-16. LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust of Lucilla right, hair in waves and coiled up in a chignon at back of head / PIE-TAS S – C, Pietas, draped, veiled and diademed, standing left, dropping incense from right hand into lighted altar at feet, holding box of incense in left. RIC (Aurelius) 1756. BMC (Aurelius) 1161. Cohen 54. Lovely olive green patina, very lightly smoothed in spots.

Although sympathetically portrayed by beautiful actresses in the movies Fall of the Roman Empire and Gladiator, the real-life Lucilla seems not to have been such an admirable character. She was, however, quite beautiful, as the portrait on this exquisite sestertius reveals.
