Haile Selassie gold Coronation Medal EE 1923 (1930) MS61 NGC, Gill-S13. 40mm. An impressive example of this large-size gold coronation medal of Ras Tafari who chose to take his Ge'ez name of Haile Selassie upon becoming regent. Finer than most, this lightly handled example was struck in bold relief, with the central portrait rising prominently from the fields and light doubling at the top obverse edge confirming at least two strikes were required to bring out the sharp detail. While we are unable to determine the exact weight of this medal in the NGC holder, the standard reference work for Ethiopian coin and medals, authored by Dennis Gill, lists the weight at 47.7 grams.
