William I the Conqueror (1066-1087) Penny 1074-1077 AU58 NGC, Hertford mint, Theodric as moneyer, Two Stars type, S-1254, N-845, EMC-2006.0361 (this coin). + PILLELM REX AN, crowned and diademed bust facing with a star to either side / + ÐEDRIC ON HERTF, cross botonée with central pellet over quadrilateral with incurved sides. Discovered by a metal detectorist in Norfolk in October of 2006 and registered with the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge under the above EMC number, this apparently unique piece is evidence of minting of this "Two Stars" type at the Hertford mint, heretofore unpublished. The surfaces exhibit lovely tone and clear detail throughout with clear legends and much residual luster.
