Akita Prefecture 19th Century? Small gold Bar, 3.49gm, 25x9mm, choice XF. The stamps are possibly Provincial and bank stamps. There is no denomination stamp. The consignor listed this piece as being from "Akita Island." Akita is a prefecture (similar to a state in the United States) on northern Honshu island, and is not an island. The city of Akita is the main city in Akita prefecture. In the 1800's there was gold mining in this mountainous area, therefore, it is likely that this piece was a testing bar, or very small gold mining bar, from mines in Akita prefecture. We have shown the pictures of the bar to a very knowledgeable coin dealer in Japan, and he stated that he considers the stamps to be genuine. He also said that he has seen a similar bar in silver, but this is the first gold bar, of this type, he has seen. Quite interesting, and very rare.
