South Peru. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838 CUZCO-MS AU Details (Rims Filed) PCGS, Cuzco mint, KM171, Fr-92. An ever-popular Latin American type featuring, on the obverse, the personification of the sun radiating between banners crossed in saltire and, on the reverse, fortifications on the shoreline, a cornucopia, an active volcano, and a ship at sea. Some scattered contact marks, but a fairly decent strike for issue, with good detail on the sun's face. Some edge filing is noted as the details designation indicates, but does not overall detract from this specimen's charm. A great type coin.
