Charles VII silver "Pretender" 5 Pesetas 1874 MS61 NGC, Brussels mint. Cal-Type 1 #1. Plain edge. A fully pleasing example of this popular Pretender issue that was struck before the coronation of Alfonso XII and depicts the portrait of Charles VII--the Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne who maintained a court and government in exile. Both sides are awash in lilac-gray color, with deeper highlights that rest against the raised portions, while post-strike imperfections that align with the grade are noted in the patinated fields. Most pleasing in this technical and visual combination, and sure to delight once in hand.
