Victoria gold Pattern 1/2 Sovereign 1855 VF Details (Graffiti) PCGS, Sydney mint, KM-Pn3, cf. Fr-10a (for later business strikes). Type II portrait, reeded edge. Obv. Youthful head left, wearing grain wreath and braided hair encircling ear. Rev. Crown and country within wreath; mint above, denomination below. An excessively rare pattern issue, featuring a more youthful bust of the queen with hair braided around her ear. This type is known by just a few examples in business strike, one of which is now in the Museum of Victoria, having been previously sold by A. H. Baldwin in 1929; the other being a slightly cleaned AU, which realized a hammer of AUD 115,000 (~$119,000 [!]) in 2012. Our specimen, the third, does exhibit some moderate wear and marks, along with some graffiti as mentioned in the details designation, but remains an attractive and, of the two held privately, far more reasonable piece to acquire. An ultimate rarity within the Australian and British Commonwealth series.
