João Prince Regent "Struck over United States Bust Dollar" 960 Reis 1815-R VF35 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM307.3. Struck over USA 1798 Bust Dollar. Wholly original, with a near-complete absence of noticeable marks over the surfaces and moderate gray tone throughout that mixes with a touch of purple hue to produce rather handsome eye-appeal. As a regular coin, quite common, but rare and highly desirable when struck over this American host, with essentially all other examples, as would be logical, appearing on Spanish colonial 8 reales. On this piece, while faint, the lines of the shield on the "Heraldic Eagle" reverse remain visible, while portions of the legends are also spotted; intense inspection with a loupe yields the underlying date, which sits beneath the ES · D of JOANNES · D · G in the obverse legends. Only the third of its kind we have offered, the last bringing an impressive $23,500 when it was sold in our January 2013 New York auction.
