Ecuador
Republic gold 8 Escudos 1855/2 QUITO-GJ MS63 NGC, Quito mint, KM34.1, Fr-8, Onza-1774. The single finest graded example of the date, both sides of this Select piece exhibit full satiny luster and enchanting color. As the grade suggests, modest marks reside over the surfaces, with a few well-blended points of contact in front of Bolivar's portrait being the most notable. Also worthy of mention is a small speck of foreign debris in the field behind the bust and a small indention in Bolivar's neck that appears to be a contact mark, but is actually a die characteristic for this date. The strike, so often a major issue for this type, is among the fullest we've seen for any date, with some general softness appearing in the centers, but detail that far exceeds the localized bluntness that is often encountered. Extremely rare quality overall--a coin undoubtedly bound for a most-advanced cabinet of Latin onzas!
