PҺILIPPVS DEI GRA FRANCҺORVM REX, Phillippe, holding lis-tipped scepter and raising hand in benediction, seated facing on throne within ornate draped portico; triple annulet stops / + XPC VIИCIT XPC RЄGИAT XPC IMPЄRAT, ornate cross fleurée within polylobe, with inward-facing lis at each point and crown in each spandrel; triple annulet stops. An exceptionally lustrous and well struck example of this highly sought-after type, featuring extraordinary centering and a pleasing tone. Seldom encountered in this near-gem state of preservation, the present example is destined to generate a great deal of enthusiasm. For comparison, an NGC MS63 (with more flatness to the strike) realized a hammer of $9,500 in our 2017 ANA auction (sale 3056, lot 30210).
