Henri III gold Ecu d'or au soleil 1589-A/C AU58 NGC, Compiègne mint, 3.29g, Fr-386, Dup-Unlisted (cf. Dup-1120 for type in Double Ecu weight). Of the greatest rarity, this one-year type was issued illegally in tiny numbers at the Compiègne mint to the north of Paris. The mintmarks are an "A" in the obverse exergue and a "C" at the end of the reverse legend. We are left to presume, therefore, that the "H" in the center of the reverse cross is not a mintmark as noted on the NGC insert, but simply the king's initial. The present example, one of only two of this denomination available to collectors that we have been able to locate in our research, remains highly lustrous with lively coppery tone and solidly struck centers. Just a hint of peripheral weakness is noted, but has little impact on the overall eye appeal of this extremely rare offering.
