Louis XIII gold 4 Louis d'or à la tête laurée 1640-A VF25 NGC, Paris mint, KM111, Fr-408, Ciani-1610, Gad-60. Obv. Large laureate head of King Louis XIII right with date below. Rev. Cross of eight crowned L's with fleur-de-lis in the angles. Known as a "Homage-Piece," the large gold pieces of this type were struck for presentation to the King by the engraver Jean Warin as a preview to the adoption of a new monetary system and were often used as currency for the King's table games. Jean Warin, an artist of wide fame, made this type in denominations of 4, 8, and 10 Louis. The design was adopted for striking regular issues of half-Louis, Louis, and double Louis. This example shows even wear, with greenish-gold patina, and light contact marks. An extremely rare, and historic type with approximately 7 examples known. The first we have seen.
