France
Republic gold Proof Essai 2 Centimes 1877-A PR65 NGC, Paris mint, Maz-2214A. Another extremely rare issue, this is the only example of the type that has been on the open market in at least a decade. It was first offered in a Stack's auction in January 2007, where it went unsold, and then found its way to a St. James auction in October, 2011, where it hammered at 6500 GBP (just over $10,000 at the time). Considering the market for 19th French proofs has taken off in recent years, we would not be surprised at all to see that previous mark surpassed. Die polish lines are noted in the fields, but essentially no post-striking flaws worth mentioning. Simply put, a phenomenal Gem of a very rare issue.
