Republic gold Proof Essai 5 Centimes 1875-A PR64 NGC, Paris mint, Maz-2194 (R4). This is the only example of this issue that has been on the market in at least a decade. We first sold it in 2009 for an all-in price of $5,750 (sale 3004, lot 21042). It then made it's way to St. James, where it sold in 2011 for a hammer price of 7,500 GBP ($11,608 at the time). No other pieces have been on the market in the interim, alluding to the extreme rarity of this coin. Numerous die polish lines are noted throughout, which should not be mistaken for hairlines or handling marks. Light toning that haloes the raised surfaces adds a charming element of originality to this coin's appeal.
