Great Britain
Archbishops of Canterbury. Wulfred (805-832) Penny ND (c. 815-23) MS62 NGC, Canterbury mint, Saeberht as moneyer, Group III, S-889, North-240/1. + VVLFRED A|RCHIEPI, tonsured bust facing; pellets to left and right / + SAEBERHT MONETA. Dorobernia Civitas in monogram form and within linear circular border. A very rare piece, and extremely difficult to encounter in such an exceptional state of preservation. Deeply toned and highly attractive, this specimen exceeds the grade of the Millennia example (an NGC MS61, though of a different moneyer), which realized a hammer of $12,500 in 2008. It needs to be noted, however, that the present piece does have a fairly extensive flan crack near the lower right side of the obverse. There also appears to be some previously applied resin to aid in the filling of this crack. Close and careful examination is greatly urged.
