Henry VIII (1509-1547) gold Sovereign 1538-1541 XF45 PCGS, Tower mint, Second coinage, Lis over Sunburst mm on obverse, Arrow mm on reverse. S-2267, North-1782, Schneider-573. ҺЄՈRICVS DЄI GRACIA | RЄX | AՈGLIЄ ЄT FRAՈC' DՈS' ҺIB', Henry seated facing on highly ornate throne, holding orb and scepter; portcullis below; mullet and double mullet stops / IҺЄSVS AVTЄM TRΛՈSIЄՈS PЄR MЄDIVM ILLORVM IBAT, coat-of-arms set upon Tudor rose; all within decorative polylobe. An exceedingly pleasing and majestic issue, this large size gold denomination has always carried with it great significance, be it when it was first struck (its massive purchasing power of 22 shillings and 6 pence) or today (an important and hotly collected rarity). The exceptionally broad flan lends to it (and to its engraver) an inviting canvas on which a highly artistic and intricate design was engraved. No detail was omitted, as can be seen through the decorative pillars on the sides of the throne to the minute cross-hatching on the throne's back. Additionally, the reverse legend lends a poignant message to the viewer that "...and Jesus, passing through the midst of them, went His way," a reminder of the divine right of kings and its absolute importance to the crown. In terms of condition, it is immediately clear that this enchanting specimen did circulate lightly and briefly, but largely remained free from the ravages of time and handling---an impressive feat for something so large. For comparison, an NGC AU50 realized a hammer of $55,000 in our 2012 Long Beach auction (sale 3020, lot 23945).
