Great Britain
George III gold Proof Sovereign 1818 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS, by Benedetto Pistrucci, Royal mint, KM674, S-3785A, W&R-198 (R6, only 3-5 pieces known), ascending colon after BRITANNIAR variety. Obv. Laureate head of George III right. Rev. St. George on horseback right, slaying dragon with broken lance. A stunning example, with deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices. The strike is superb and the only noticeable flaws are a tiny diagnostic spot on the nape of the neck and on the forehead. Only the second example that we have had the privilege of selling at auction, with the first a PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS example sold at our August 8, 2014 ANA auction, realizing a hammer price of $45,000. An Exceedingly rare issue, with perhaps slightly more known than the 3-5 pieces listed in W&R. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify five examples, and it appears that four separate pieces have been offered at auction in the last decade. This piece is the single finest of the five pieces that have been certified, with an outstanding pedigree.
