Edward VI (1547-1553) Crown 1551 AU55 NGC, Southwark mint, Fine silver issue of 1551-1553, Y mm, S-2478, N-1933. A truly exceptional example of this type, rarely encountered better than Very Fine. The strike was exacting and well-centered upon a planchet of good metal with little of the annealing flaws typically seen on silver issues of this size from this period. Mild circulation wear is visible along the highpoints while recessed areas remain relatively free of post-strike abrasions while displaying ample residual luster. All of these attributes are accentuated by a gold and lilac patina which bathes the surfaces and enhances the originality. Currently, this example is displaying online as the finest certified example at NGC, although we know of one other example which has been certified MS63 NGC and is for an unknown reason not a part of the NGC census.
