Papal States. Pius VI gold 10 Zecchini 1787 Anno XII MS63 Prooflike NGC, Bologna mint, KM309, Fr-390, Berman-3012. Obv. St. Peter seated facing among the clouds, raising hand in benediction and holding scepter; coat-of-arms to lower left and right. Rev. Garnished coat-of-arms surmounted by papal tiara and keys crossed in saltire. An exceedingly lustrous and enchanting type, featuring an extraordinary degree of brilliance and superbly prooflike fields. Some scattered hairlines are visible, mostly due to the reflective and unforgiving nature of the surfaces, but the specimen nevertheless remains a choice example. A light golden-orange tone further excites the eye, generating a tremendous degree of appeal. A similarly breathtaking version realized a hammer of €18,500 in early 2012.
