Papal States. Pius IX gold 100 Lire 1866-R Anno XXI MS61 NGC, Rome mint, KM1383, Fr-278, Berman-3330. With a mintage of just 1,115 pieces, this large gold issue tends to be one which is missing from many collections of 19th century world gold. A charming example, this specimen features pleasing luster and a warming golden-orange tone. A few scattered marks are evident, but are wholly consistent with the grade assigned. Each and every detail for this bust has been carefully and artfully engraved, from Pius' pupil and facial contours, to the ornate design on his stole. A visually stunning piece, and one which should elicit intense focus. Compare to a very similar example, an NGC MS62, which realized a hammer of $7,000 in our 2017 NYINC auction (sale 3051, lot 34317).
