Vittorio Emanuele III 5 Lire 1914-R MS64+ NGC, Rome mint, KM56, Dav-144, Pag-708. Obv. Uniformed bust right. Rev. Minerva, holding branch and shield, standing left on ornate carriage carrying palm fronds and shield; to left, quadriga pulling carriage left. An exceptionally lustrous, blazing near-gem, as is indicated by this plus designation. An incredibly awesome design, bordering on medallic stature given the intense artistry and thick borders. The surfaces yield an almost prooflike quality and feature an enticing argent nature. A cartwheel radiance fully emblazons the reverse, while a light golden tone envelopes each side, further enchanting and transfixing the gaze of the viewer. Only a few specimens have been graded finer, one of which be an NGC MS65 which realized a hammer of $14,000 in our 2016 NYINC auction (sale 3044, lot 31338). In the opinion of this cataloger, there is little difference between these two specimens, save for some iridescent toning on the MS65. Deserving of great adoration.
