Philip II (III of Spain, 1598-1621) gold 4 Cruzados ND XF40 PCGS, Lisbon mint, Fr-53, cf. Gomes-26.01. Attractively toned with moderate circulation wear and some peripheral striking weakness. Rare as a denomination, and even more so as a sub-type thereof, identifiable by the "L" and "B" letters on opposite sides of the obverse arms. In addition, the reverse die differs from the type plated in Gomes, with the arrangements of dots in between the cross angles not matching any listed variety. In this charming state, sure to capture significant attention from type collectors, but perhaps even more desirable to specialist in the series that are certain to be intrigued by this seemingly unrecorded pairing of dies.
Please note that PCGS has misattributed this piece as an issue of Philip III (IV of Spain).
