Catherine II gold Medal 1763 UNC Details (Loop Added) NGC, Dia-123.5 (R3 in gold). 29mm, 20.07 g. By V. Nikonov. Commemorating the Establishment of the Foundlings' Hospital in St. Petersburg; the institution of this award commenced in 1808 during the reign of Alexander I. Obv. Crowned, draped, and mantled bust right. Rev. И ВЫ ЖИВИ БУДЕТЕ ("you too shall live"), allegorical representation of Religion standing right, holding long cross over shoulder, extending hand toward and consoling woman kneeling right, holding swaddled infant; in background to right, façade of the hospital, with the monogram of Catherine in the pediment. A highly interesting award medal, especially in gold. Though gilt bronze and silver examples of this piece (most of which have the loop attached as well) have sold intermittently, another specimen in gold could not be located by this cataloger. Exceedingly lustrous and sharply struck, with just a few faint hairlines. An enchanting golden-orange tone near the peripheries adds further charm and appear to this warming piece.
