Nicholas I platinum 12 Roubles 1833-CПБ MS64 Prooflike NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C179, Fr-158, Bit-42. With a mintage of just 255 specimens, this large platinum piece--the largest denomination of the series--is an enchanting and elusive giant. Offering a deeply sublime tone and lustrous radiance, it is difficult to imagine one encountering a better example, with the present piece boasting near-gem status. The fields are impeccably smooth and brilliant, with the mirrored nature presenting a wonderful prooflike appearance. A light golden tone highlights the peripheries, further transfixing and captivating the gaze of the observer. An exceptional ocular experience and a true capstone coin. Far superior than any other example of this date which has become available over the past decade-plus. For comparison, an NGC PR63 Cameo from 1831 (a date with a mintage of nearly six time the 1833 figure) realized a hammer of $72,500 in early 2015.
