Alexander II gold Specimen Award Medal ND (after 1828) SP61 PCGS, by R. Gannemann, Obverse as Diakov-625.1, but with a different reverse. Obv. Bust of Alexander II left with R. Gannemann signature. Rev. Five-line inscription as opposed to the Crowned eight-line inscription for Diakov-625.1. The only record of this gold medal being offered, that we can reference, is in a 2016 Gorny & Mosch auction 242, Lot 6229 (this medal),where it is listed as Diakov-625.1 (R4). Also offered in the same sale is another gold medal, also listed as Lot 6230 and also listed as Diakov-625.1. This second medal is the exact type, both obverse and reverse, of the piece pictured in Diakov as #625.1. The piece we are offering here, while listed in the Gorny & Mosch sale as Diakov-625.1, has a completely different reverse from the example pictured in Diakov. We can find no other example of this obverse/reverse combination. The six-line reverse of the piece offered here translates (approximately) as," The most worthy of the leadind students of the Leah chapters." Possibly instituted as a prize medal by the Pedagogical Main Institute founded by Nicholas I. Quite rare.
