BRITAIN. Atrebates. Verica (ca. AD 10-40). AV stater (5.41 gm). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5. Struck ca. AD 20-25. COM • F in rectangular incuse tablet / Celtic warrior on horseback right, brandishing spear, VIR above left, REX below horse. Van Arsdell 500-1. Seaby 120. Well centered and boldly struck.

Verica, a king of the Atrebates along the southern coast of Britain, apparently ruled from the locale of the later Fishbourne Roman Palace in west Sussex. He seems to have enjoyed friendly relations with Rome. His territories were overrun by Caratacus in about 40 BC, and Verica's appeal to Rome for help provided the pretext for Claudius' invasion of the island in AD 43.
