GRECO-BACTRIAN KINGDOM. Eucratides I the Great (ca. 170-145 BC). AR tetradrachm (35mm, 16.68 gm, 12h). Choice VF. Diademed and draped bust of Eucratides right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ EYKPATIΔOY, the Dioscuri, holding palm fronds and spears, on horses rearing right; monogram in lower right field. Bopearachchi Série 1D. SNG ANS 432. Struck on a broad flan.
This early tetradrachm of Eucratides shows him as a more or less conventional Hellenistic king, lacking the distinctive adornments and self-given title Megas ("The Great") he would later adopt. It was likely struck while he was still contending with Antimachus, Agathocles and possibly Panteleon for supreme authority in the Bactrian realm. He would eventually supplant them all to become the most powerful of all Greco-Bactrian kings.
