ROMAN EMPIRE. Ca. 3rd Century AD. Bronze military baldric fitting. Nearly 60mm in length and weighing 18.67 grams, this fitting is in the shape of a ceremonial spearhead called a "beneficiarius standard," marking out the wearer as an officer on special assignment who is "immune" from normal duties. This fitting would have been used to secure the two sides of a leather shoulder belt, or baldric, suspending a sword (spatha) from the officer's left hip. Pale green patina with light earthen encrustation.
