Merovingian. Anonymous gold Tremissis in the name of Justinian I (AD 527-565) VF, Pseudo-Imperial Period (ca. 500-580), uncertain mint in Gaul. 1.27g, MEC 356 var. D N IVITNI-NIANVS R, cuirassed bust right, seen from front, wearing pearl diadem surmounted by dot within crecent, dot on breast / VICTORIΛ Λ-VC-ITOR, degenerate Victory standing facing, crown with depending ties in right hand, globus cruciger in left; mangled version of CONOB in below. Likely minted during the reigns of Clovis I's four sons (Childebert I, Chlothar I, Charibert I, and Chilperic I). MEC supposes that a variety of this type may have been minted by the Merovingians in imitation of an Ostrogothic tremissis of Athalaric I (526-534). Although the legends and designs are somewhat crudely struck (with a light, surface-deep crack along the front of the obverse bust), this piece still displays strong detail in the central devices with attractive and largely unblemished surfaces. A very rare and desirous piece for any serious collector of early medieval Frankish gold.
