COLOMBIA. Banco de la República. 1 Peso Oro, August 6, 1938. P-385p. Face and Back Proofs. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66.
2 pieces in lot. In the 1930s era of many commemorative coins in the Americas, this is a most unusual commemorative bank note issue. It commemorates the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Bogotá. It is one of the most stunning designs from Latin America in the period and is justifiably popular with world note collectors. Both are India paper proofs on wide margined cards. The face has a medallic portrait in the center of Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada with flanking allegorical females floating in the air. These vignettes are printed in blue upon a multi-color tint. The overall effect is three-dimensional. The commemorative back is brown with the titled historical scene crowded with individuals. There were not many proofs of this type in the 1990-1991 ABN sales. Perfectly matched in grade and perhaps the finest pair known. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66.

From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money.

Estimate: $750.00- $1250.00
