COLOMBIA. 1759-JV 8 Reales. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Ferdinand VI (1746-1759). Restrepo 10.1. Gilboy SF-8-1. AU-55 (PCGS).
Another beautiful specimen, this example shows fine remaining luster and very attractive original toning in antique gray and subtle gold. Some minor hairlines are noted, along with a few light scrapes on the reverse near the denomination, but the eye appeal is superb. Some trivial roughness is seen atop the obverse under magnification. The strike is a bit softer at the centers than the preceding specimen, but the centering is better, with denticles framing both sides except for a small area at the upper right obverse and upper left reverse.
Struck from the same obverse die as the previous specimen, but a different reverse die, with this one showing the lower right castle crossing over the border below it and a wide space between IS of HISPAN. A substantial die break at the top of RE of REX matches to the Aureo & Calicó Auction 242:191 specimen, the Lissner coin, and the Restrepo plate coin. A third reverse is known, seen on both the Millennia - Patrick Tan specimen and the coin offered in Cayon's February 2012 sale, both of which are struck from the same obverse die, a different die than the one seen here.
