COLOMBIA. 1867 20 Pesos. Medellín mint. Restrepo M337.1 / 1867.2. AU-53 (PCGS).
Cataloged as a circulation strike in the Norweb sale and as a pattern in Restrepo, this coin is extraordinarily rare, even if not all authorities agree upon its exact nature. Sedwick called it RRRR and valued it at $5,000 in 1991. In 1997, this piece brought $11,000. The surfaces clearly indicate this coin was used in commerce, even if it was not produced with that intent, as scattered light bagmarks are seen across its lustrous medium yellow gold surfaces. Both sides show impressive luster, especially at the peripheries. The devices are somewhat distinct from later Medellín 20 Pesos, even as the typefaces and layout are the same. The portrait closely resembles that of the 1868 Medellín "wide forehead" pieces. An important rarity, sure to be a highlight in an advanced set of 20 Pesos.

From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins.

From Spink America's sale of the Norweb Collection, March 1997, lot 596. Earlier, purchased from Spink.

Estimate: $7500.00- $12500.00
