SOUTH AFRICA. Z. A. R. Kaalpond, ND (1900). NGC.
Hern-Z55; KJ-192. A blank for a South African pond struck without rim also know as "Rimless Blank Ponde". Shallow circular scrapes on both sides, done by a scraping machine to reduce the weight to the proper standard. Old ink note, "Kruger Pond Made in The Field No Dies" on obverse and "7" and "25(superscript)" on reverse. The ink is probably the result of an old-time dealer or collector making note of what they thought this piece was and either what they were selling it for or what it was purchased for. However, these were not produced in the field rather at the Pretoria mint and were according to legend confiscated by the State Attorney, J.C. Smuts, under direct order from President Kruger to gather and confiscate all available monies to pay the troops. It was only after the coins had left the mint that it was discovered that some of the pieces were incomplete, but of the correct weight. The amount of pieces in existence is unknown. A very interesting piece of South African history with an interesting story. In NGC holder without grade. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.

Estimate: $1200.00- $1600.00
