FRANCE. Cast Bronze Uniface Plaque of Roman Consul & Dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla (Sylla), ND (ca. 1650).
105 mm; 197.2 gms. Forrer-65. By Claude Warin (Varin), who produced an extensive series of portrait plaques of French personages, Englishmen of note, and illustrious men of antiquity and the Renaissance - this piece being of that series. Finely done high-relief portrait of Sylla to the right, L. COR. SVLLA. COS. around, signed VARIN below the truncation. The reverse an incuse version of the obverse. Very nice old bronze finish, just a touch of friction on the highest points. Some white tape or adhesive residue on the reverse. EXTREMELY FINE.
