GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Taler, ND (ca. 1650). Augustus II (1635-66). NGC AU Details--Tooled.
Dav-6357; KM-446. Draped and armored bust 3/4 r., wearing elaborate eagle collar piece. Reverse: Wanderer with staff standing l. before two large, well-detailed ships in a harbor. A whimsical type sometimes referred to as a "Ship Taler" for its distinctive reverse type likely relating to August's known penchant for travel. Minor unevenness in the strike. Rich gray silver with some toning highlights. The noted defect of "Tooling" on the insert is tasteful smoothing in the obverse fields while the reverse exhibits less finesse and is more obvious. Deeply toned with a lovely blue sheen. An attractive example despite the details designation. NGC AU Details--Tooled.
Estimate: $600.00- $800.00
