NEW ZEALAND. Christchurch. Alliance Tea Co. Penny Token, 1866. NGC VF Details--Scratches.
Andrews-8; Lampard-301a; KM-TN1.2; Gray-6a; Renniks-14. Rarity 8. EXTERMELY RARE. Large date, missing first stop in obverse legend. Central inscription divided "Italian Warehouse" and "Fancy Goods" in four-lines, "Teas Coffees Fruits & Spices. 1866." around; Reverse: Central inscription divided "Opposite Bank of New Zealand" and "Robert Thompson Manger 1866" in six-lines, "Alliance Tea Company" above. Light unobtrusive scratches on obverse from long ago now toned over and even. Moderate wear consistent with the grade displaying a lovely chocolate patina which deepens toward the edges and amongst the devices. Overall a handsome piece despite the noted defects.
