Good Fine - Very Fine. Rare and interesting piece, in comparatively better condition than the example held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
First seen as a healing angel, and then over time as a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil, the Archangel Michael would have been an obvious choice for the wearer of this icon pendant to look to for protection. That this was the function of this piece is evidenced by the more legible inscription of the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from which can be gleaned Arch-commander Michael...protect the owner...".
