With full borders and bold embossing. An endorsement on the back in light brown ink states "Paid out Sept. 25th, 1861. / M. L. Smith / Maj of Engineers." Under Robert E. Lee's command, Smith worked on fortifications for the City of New Orleans along the east side of the river.
