The brief pontificate of Gregorio XIV was marked by his vigorous intervention in favor of the Catholic party in France during the Religious Wars. He excommunicated the Protestant King Henri IV, and took a strong pro-Spanish stance in other matters (motivated at least in part because he was elected thanks to the influence of the Spanish cardinals).
