English Coins from the Collection of the Late Dr John Hulett (Part III)

BRITISH COINS, Cnut (1016-1035), Penny, Short Cross type, Lincoln, Matathan Balluc, ma·dan balvc on li, 1.08g/9h (Mossop pl. liii, 4; BEH 1664; N 790; S 1159). Nearly extremely fine, the double moneyer's name unusual £240-300

---

Provenance: Bt F.J. Rist.

Matathan is one of several Irish names (like Crinan and Crucan) that appear on coins of York and Lincoln at this time, presumably due to the cities' connections with the Hiberno-Norse Vikings of Dublin. The name Balluc is probably a Gaelic surname although Veronica Smart briefly considers an alternative meaning (Mossop, p.25)
