Gallienus, 253-268. Aureus (Gold, 22 mm, 5.45 g, 7 h), Rome, 261. IMP GALLIENVS PIVS FEL AVG Cuirassed bust of Gallienus to right, wearing decorated crested helmet. Rev. P M TR P VIIII COS IIII P P Serapis, wearing kalathos, standing front, head to left, raising his right hand and holding scepter in his left; to left at feet, kerberos. Calicó 3573 = Cohen 833 = MIR 450 = RIC 19. Of the highest rarity and importance, the second known example. Three test cuts and with minor traces of mounting, otherwise, very fine.


This highly interesting issue was previously only known from the now lost example cited by Cohen as ex Schellersheim, of which no illustration exists. Its forms part of a festival issue struck on the beginning of Gallienus' 4th consulate on 1st January 261 that also included a Janus reverse (MIR 449, known in four examples and struck from the same obverse die).
