Theodosius III of Adramytium, 715-717. 'Hexagram' (Silver, 18 mm, 2.82 g, 6 h), struck from solidus dies, Constantinopolis. d N TҺ[ЄOdOSIЧS MЧL A] Facing bust of Theodosius III, wearing loros and crown, holding patriarchal cross with an X at the intersection surmounted on globe and anexikakia. Rev. [VICTORIA AY]ςЧ A / CONOB Cross potent on base and three steps. DOC 2 note. MIB 12. SB 1491. Extremely rare and of great interest. A beautifully toned example. Struck on a short flan, otherwise, good very fine.

The extreme rarity, the unusual weight and the use of solidus dies indicates that this issue was not struck for regular circulation. It probably served, rather, a ceremonial role, possibly as a coronation issue struck in 715 on the accession to power of Theodosius III.
